Explore Imotski: Dive into History, Nature, and Culture in Croatia's Hidden Treasure

Imotski is an old town located in the south of the Republic of Croatia, at the crossroads of Dalmatian Zagora and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Imotski has all the characteristics of a coastal town, thanks mostly to the climate and the urban architecture of the old town core. Stone houses, steep narrow streets with stone steps are witnesses of the former appearance of this place, whose old core is also protected.

Key Highlights of Imotski:

  1. Topana Fortress: The town is dominated by the Topana fortress, built in the 10th century, which throughout history had an extremely strategic significance. Today, it is interesting to visitors due to its preserved appearance and viewpoints on the town, the "Gospin dolac" stadium, and the Blue Lake. Within the fortress, there is also a votive church dedicated to Our Lady of Anđela, the patron saint of Imotski. Several events take place around the walls in the summer, and under the fortress itself is a monument to Croatian defenders. From Topana, going down the 92 stone steps of Imotska, built in the 18th century, one comes to Imotski Square.
  2. Blue Lake (Modro Jezero): Below Topana is the Blue Lake, a popular promenade, and in the summer months, the main bathing area in Imotski. Its dimensions are 800 by 400 meters, and the depth varies, so in winter and spring it is about one hundred meters, and at the beginning of autumn, it can dry up. Stone serpentines built in 1907 lead to its clear surface.
  3. Red Lake (Crveno Jezero): In the immediate vicinity (1.5 km) is the Red Lake, the deepest karst lake in Europe, whose depth of depression is 528 meters, and the water depth reaches more than 300 meters with a bottom below sea level.

It is an hour's drive away from Međugorje and Mostar in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina, one hour from ancient Split, and thanks to the tunnel of St. Ilija, just half an hour from Makarska, and other places on the Makarska Riviera.
